CHAPTER 27

Psychology and Discipline

However good your system is, one decision on a bad day can erase a month. This chapter is about stopping that decision before it happens.

27.1The Tilt Cycle

The loop from a loss to ruin
Fig. 27.1 The loop from a loss to ruin
Tilt is not an event, it is a cycle. You can break it at any link, but the cheapest place is a 30-minute cooldown after the first loss.
StepWhat happens in the bodyRemedy
Loss
Heart rate up, cortisol rises
Charts closed for 30 minutes
Urge
"I must get it back"
Checklist becomes mandatory
Size up
Reasoning collapses
Daily lot lock
Bigger loss
Guilt and anger
Day over, close the app

27.2Systems Beat Willpower

  • Willpower is finite, systems are not. Decide the rules in advance.
  • Set the daily loss limit in the platform instead of relying on memory.
  • Close the app after your session; scrolling invites new trades.
  • Same desk, same hours, same checklist - environment reduces decisions.

27.3The Body: Sleep, Caffeine, Screen

HabitImpactRule
Under six hours of sleep
Decision quality halves
No trading
More than three coffees
Anxiety and rushing
One cup at session start
Eight hours of screens
Decision fatigue
Two hours maximum per session
No exercise
Lower stress tolerance
Twenty minutes, three days a week

27.4The Winning Streak Trap

After five wins confidence rises, size rises and rules loosen - more dangerous than a losing streak. The rule: the same size after wins.
  • The only reason to increase size: positive average R over 100 trades.
  • Adjust size at most once a month.
  • After a win, grade the process, not your ego.

27.5A Plan For Recovering From Drawdown

  1. Stop first: 48 hours with no trades.
  2. Read the journal and check whether a rule was broken.
  3. If a rule broke: half size, 20 demo trades.
  4. If no rules broke, the strategy is fine - only patience needs work.
  5. The comeback needs proof: ten correct-process trades.

27.6Identity And Patience

Identify with the person who runs the same process every day, not with the person who must profit today. Identity tied to outcomes breaks on a loss; identity tied to process turns a loss into data.

27.7Journaling Prompts

  • Which setup did I take and why, and which did I skip and why?
  • At which moment did my hand shake, and what does that signal?
  • Did I break a rule today? Which one?
  • What one thing will I change tomorrow? Only one.
