CHAPTER 9
SMC Trading Guidelines
SMC stands for Smart Money Concepts: reading the footprints of institutional orders. It is ICT under different vocabulary, and this chapter maps one onto the other.
9.1What SMC Actually Is
SMC rests on three beliefs: price moves by collecting liquidity, obvious support and resistance are stop pools, and big moves start only after liquidity is taken. All three are identical to ICT.

| SMC says | ICT says | What it really is |
|---|---|---|
Liquidity grab | Stop hunt | A fast wick that takes stops |
Supply / demand | Order block | The last opposing candle |
Imbalance | FVG | A three-candle gap |
BOS | BOS | A break with the trend |
CHoCH | MSS | The first break against |
Premium / discount | Fib 50 / OTE | Upper or lower half of the range |
Mitigation | Breaker | The return for trapped orders |
Session | Killzone | The active execution window |
9.2ERL and IRL: External and Internal Liquidity
SMC calls the outer pool ERL and the inner pool IRL. The rule is simple: IRL first, ERL second - the internal swing is taken before the range extreme.

- Mid-range means patience: internal liquidity goes first.
- Once the outer edge is taken, the draw flips.
- Never enter at the outer edge; enter on the internal return.
9.3IDM / Inducement: The Trap Before The Zone
A small swing usually sits in front of the real order block or FVG. That is the IDM: early entries and their stops are collected there, then price reaches the real zone.

- Find the zone, then also mark the small swing in front of it.
- Watch whether price takes that small swing.
- After the sweep and an MSS, enter at the real zone.
9.4The Four-Step SMC Entry Model

| Step | What to look for | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
Sweep | IDM or equal low/high taken | Entering before the sweep |
CHoCH | Last lower high broken with displacement | Mistaking a wick break for CHoCH |
Zone | OB and FVG at the same price | OB only, no gap |
Delivery | Target the ERL | Trading without a target |
9.5SMC Premium and Discount
In SMC the 50 percent is equilibrium and 62-79 percent is OTE; ICT uses the same levels with different names. The rule is hard: never buy premium, never sell discount.

9.6The Seven-Point SMC Checklist
| # | Condition | If not |
|---|---|---|
১ | HTF bias clear | Stop |
২ | Price in the right half | Stop |
৩ | IDM or liquidity taken | Wait |
৪ | CHoCH plus displacement | Wait |
৫ | OB and FVG together | Weaker setup |
৬ | Killzone | Half size |
৭ | R:R above 1:2 | Skip |
9.7Common SMC Mistakes
- Calling every coloured block an OB - an OB needs displacement and a BOS.
- Treating the 50 percent as an entry - it is location, not a trigger.
- Entering the zone without checking for the inducement.
- Trading a CHoCH without an MSS.
- Looking for the same zone on every timeframe.
